Paul Whipple
tennis professional
The son of a nomadic oilman, Paul “Whip” Whipple, bounced around the US and Norway as a child before settling down in Evergreen, Colorado, as a teenager. In Evergreen, Whip was a three-sport athlete: soccer, skiing, and tennis. After college at CSU (where he also memorably played soccer for the Budweiser brewery team), Whip started playing USTA league tennis with a 5.0 rating.
Whip is passionate about USTA league tennis, calling it: “The greatest recreational sports system in human history.” He loves the team aspect of league tennis; he has averaged playing on over five teams a year since the mid-1990s. “I love going into battle with my team,” he says. In addition to representing the great state of Colorado at District, Sectional, and National tournaments at the 4.5 and 5.0 levels, and at the 8.0, 9.0, and 10.0 mixed levels, he holds Colorado State Open doubles championship crowns in the 40, 45, and 50s age groups. He is looking forward to playing in USTA National and ITF international tournaments after retiring from 31 years of teaching in the Cherry Creek School District.
As a coach, Whip has coached boys and girls tennis at Smoky Hill and Cherokee Trail High schools for over 20 years. He has introduced the joys of tennis to hundreds of juniors and adults, emphasizing that learning proper technique and footwork from the start lays the foundation for a lifetime of improvement.
While working with juniors and adults, he strives to make tennis enjoyable while teaching sound stroke fundamentals and proper footwork. He emphasizes learning all the strokes with an all-court style of play. He also enjoys working with league teams, preparing adult players for years of fun, camaraderie, and, eventually, glory, regardless of their level of play.
